Understanding PVL: awareness before tragedy

At Team Ralphie Ray, our mission is to ensure no family faces Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) without understanding and support. Our journey began with our son, Ralphie Ray, and now we are dedicated to raising awareness, dispelling myths, and supporting families affected by this condition. Learn about PVL, find solidarity, and discover how you can help us achieve our goal: awareness before tragedy. đź’™

What is PVL? đź’™

Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) is a type of brain injury that happens when the white matter around the brain’s fluid-filled spaces is damaged, often because the brain has not received enough oxygen or blood flow.

PVL can affect how a child’s brain develops and can lead to different challenges with movement, coordination, communication, learning, vision and other areas of development. Every child is different, and the impact of PVL can vary greatly.

For families, a diagnosis can bring uncertainty and many questions — especially when they have never heard of PVL before.

That’s why awareness matters.

We want parents and communities to understand PVL, recognise the challenges children may face and know that families affected by it are not alone.

We don’t want people to know about PVL because tragedy introduced it to their family. We want them to know because awareness got there first. 💙

What we want other families to know đź’™

You are not alone.

Living with PVL can bring fear, uncertainty, hospital visits, appointments and worries about the future that others may never see.

But your child is so much more than their diagnosis.

Every child’s journey is different. There will be difficult days, moments of exhaustion and times when you wonder how you’ll keep going. That’s okay. You’re human — you don’t have to be strong every second.

Celebrate the small victories. Cherish every smile, cuddle and achievement, no matter how small it may seem to others.

Keep asking questions. Keep speaking up. Keep fighting for your child.

And when it feels like nobody understands, remember:

We see you. We understand. You are not alone.

💙 From our family to yours — keep going.

PVL: myths & misunderstandings đź’™

❌ “PVL is a disease.”
PVL is a type of brain injury affecting the brain’s white matter.

❌ “Every child with PVL is the same.”
Every child is different. PVL can affect movement, communication, learning, vision and development in different ways.

❌ “You can always tell a child has PVL.”
Not always. Some difficulties may not be immediately obvious.

❌ “PVL only affects movement.”
It can affect many areas of development, including communication, coordination, learning and vision.

❌ “A diagnosis defines a child.”
It doesn’t. PVL is part of a child’s journey — it doesn’t define who they are or what they can achieve.

❌ “Families just need to stay positive.”
Living with PVL can be exhausting and frightening. It’s okay for parents to struggle too.

đź’™ Most importantly: behind every diagnosis is a child, not a label.

Every child deserves understanding, patience, support and the chance to be seen for who they truly are.

Our message đź’™

You never know when someone might need this information.

Help us raise awareness before another family has to face a diagnosis they’ve never heard of.

đź’™ Learn. Share. Speak up. Give every child a voice.

We don’t want people to know about PVL because tragedy introduced it to their family. We want people to know about it because awareness got there first.

Share Ralphie’s story. Help us make PVL known.
